Amanita pantherina, also known as the panther cap, false blusher, and the panther amanita due to its similarity to the true blusher (Amanita rubescens), is a species of fungus found in Europe and Western Asia.
The panther cap is an uncommon mushroom, found in both deciduous, especially beech and, less frequently, coniferous woodland and rarely meadows throughout Europe, western Asia in late summer and autumn. It has also been recorded from South Africa, where it is thought to have been accidentally introduced with trees imported from Europe, Asia and on Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. It is common in urban areas from winter to spring.
It is an ectomycorrhizal fungus, living in root symbiosis with a tree, deriving photosynthesised nutrients from it and providing soil nutrients in return.
Amanita Pantherina is a mysterious and powerful mushroom, filling legends and lores, myths and mysteries. The Amanita pantherina has an established history of use for spiritual, religious, and recreational use among Siberian, European, and Pan-American Shamans. The mushroom is also implicated in mysteries of the ancient Greeks – in The Mysteries of Dionysus and in Rome – in the Mithraic Mysteries .
This is “not for human consumption” according to the FDA. It is considered inedible and possibly poisonous. The Amanita Pantherina does not fall into the category of magic mushrooms as it does not have the psychoactive compound psilocybin; although it is frequently called a magic mushroom.
Amanita Pantherina contains the psychoactive compounds ibotenic acid and muscimol: the substances reacting with neurotransmitter receptors in central nervous system. The ingestion of these mushrooms produces a distinctive syndrome consisting of alternating phase of drowsiness and agitation with hallucinations, and sometimes with convulsions. The diagnosis of Amanita pantherina or Amanita muscaria poisoning is established by means of mycologic investigation of gastric lavage. The treatment is only symptomatic, and the prognosis is usually good.
